Islamabad: Pakistan's Supreme Court has suspended a presidential order appointing two judges in an ruling observers say could lead to a confrontation between the judiciary and the government.
President Asif Ali Zardari's spokesman issued a statement on Sunday dismissing rumours that the government was planning to declare a state of emergency following Saturday's late night ruling.
Zardari is already facing the prospect of legal challenges to his rule after the Supreme Court ruled against an amnesty that had been shielding him from graft allegations dating back to the 1980s.
The newspaper Dawn said Sunday that "clashes between these two institutions have led to disastrous consequences for democracy and constitutional continuity in the country.
